Matthew A. Anderson is an escheatment investigator registered with the California State Controller's Office (SCO). He has experience working with the SCO's Unclaimed Property Division (UPD) to return personal and business assets from the SCO's Unclaimed Property Fund (UPF). He also works as a Compliance Analyst at Progressive Business Corp in Chatsworth, CA, and graduated summa cum laude with a master's degree in biotechnology in 2025.
As of 2021, the SCO safeguarded $10.2 billion in lost or forgotten property. Roughly $200-$300 million gets returned each year.
When unclaimed property - usually in the form of cash - is sent to the SCO (a.k.a. “escheated”), it is indexed and available for public search on their website: claimit.ca.gov.
Anderson searches the public databases, compiles a list of unclaimed properties, and works with each customer to confirm which properties belong to them.
“For smaller claims with clear proof of ownership, you can file online and often have a check within weeks,” said State Controller Yee in 2021.
Claims where the owner is a business - and some large, personal claims - requires additional information and proof of ownership to be physically sent to the SCO’s office. Anderson helps people and businesses identify which properties can be claimed immediately and which properties require additional information. Anderson will also work with each customer to complete all the necessary forms to submit each claim.
